I am not deep enough, clearly!
I find it a little bit disturbing that with all of the deep philosophical stuff that has been discussed of late, that I find that I am no closerto having a 'philosophy' than I was this time last year, or the year before, or whenever.

However, I am firmly of the opinion that philosophies are highly overrated.
Let's be honest, a philosophy is just an idea that someone has that you like the sound of and perhaps subscribe to, and unless you are absolutely alien to the rest of humanity, there will always be someone out there that agrees with you about certain things, so perhaps you are being a philosopherto someone and don't know it.

Maybe I am just too fickle to subscribe to philosophies. Maybe that's it. :(

Philosophies

I agree that Philosophies are ideas and I think you're right that everybody is a philosopher in his/her own universe (ah I've heard that term before, I think tyrell mentioned the personal universe theory), it's usually just a matter of who wrote it down first ;)

However, as for being over-rated. Hm, I'm not sure, we all need something to hold on to, for some people it is religion, for some it is philosophy, for some it is the next episode of coronation street. The advantage of Philosophy is exactly what you've mentioned before, you CAN pick and choose, you can choose what you like about the idea and what works for you. There is no one telling you that this is the only way to see things. There is no dogma, most philosophers have said themselves that ideas are free and that anyone can use whatever they need. Again, in this case I have to agree with tyrell that it is all about yourself and the way you perceive things and if a philosophy or idea helps you to improve your life or to find guidelines, well, great, lucky you, until then you'll have to keep searching, which brings us back to the previous thread.

you don't have to subscribe to philosophies, the main problem we all face is to find something that makes us content, if it is a philosophy, the latest terry prachett book (which contains quite a few of its own philosophies), or ally mcbeal's and richard fish's heavenly solutions for life in general. We are surrounded by philosophy every day.

And if it still doesn't work for you, fine, have you ever tried poetry?

Walter Savage Landor: Dying Speech of an Old Philosopher

I strove with none, for none was worth my strife:
Nature I loved, and, next to Natrue, Art:
I warmed both hands before the fire of Life;
It sinks, and I am ready to depart.

Or art?
Munch's separation

Escher

Did I sound profound and wise? Good, goal reached! :)
